Treat Yo’ Self! | Rituals to Alleviate Anxiety

In the words of Tom and Donna from Parks and Rec, “Treat Yo’ Self!” I know there is some controversy sparked in the “green/organic/natural” beauty world right now regarding self-care and this theme of treating yourself. But I personally think it is important to engage in some “self-care” (if you will) to maintain a sense of calm and to reset yourself after a stressful day or a particularly hard month at work.

As a person who deals with anxiety on the regular, to the point where my GI system likes to rage against me in times of stress or major anxiety, I have come to enjoy some me time and practice alone time, self-care, or “treat yo’ self” type rituals. Therefore, I thought I would share my rituals that I deem important to maintain an emotional equilibrium in a time of political and social (and occasionally personal) turmoil. (I live in the U.S., and if you live under a rock, this country is going to hell in a hand basket real quick under our current administration and has affected me in ways I didn’t expect).

I don’t think the theme of treating yourself needs to entail a laundry list of things like Donna and Tom have in place…and it definitely doesn’t have to break the bank! For me, sometimes it is as simple as putting on some music (on Spotify-search for Chloe’s Playlist…Epic tracks) and staring out the window rehashing the day or event. Other times, it involves some products to help chill me out and reset my mind and emotions.

I like to do a face mask as this is helping my skin reset and gives me time where I have to be sitting still. Here are my two current favorites: Josh Rosebrook’s Cacao Antioxidant Mask (smells like cocoa) or a sheet mask from Tony Moly.

Sometimes I will take a bath, and other times I will lay on my bed, just depends on the mood. I am usually listening to music or a podcast. For laughs and girl talk, I like to listen to Bitch Sesh with Casey Wilson and Danielle Schneider, and it is a pod that breaks down Bravo’s Real Housewives franchises…which is a major guilty pleasure of mine!

I would suggest keeping a journal to help track emotions and events that caused anxiety. I need to be better at this myself, so take my advice and keep a journal! But you can also identify triggers, feelings, and reactions to certain things in your life by doing this, which may help to lessen the anxiety you are feeling.

Lastly, I would say not to be hard on yourself when you have had an anxious day, week, or month. We cannot control the outside world, or even our inside world at times, therefore, we cannot assume we will be able to fix anything outside of our control. Going forward with this principle may be helpful when trying to reconcile your anxiety with events or triggers outside of yourself. Identifying your anxieties will help you to gain better control over them…also, for me, I ask myself what is the worst thing that could happen? As long as no one will get harmed (including yourself), then you will survive it!

I by no means have my anxiety completing under control, but I find setting some “self-care” time for myself when I need it helps to reduce my anxiety and reset my attitude for the next “catastrophe” that comes my way. I hope this was helpful and provided a little perspective. Let me know what ways you unwind when you are dealing with stress or anxiety.

#Drop 10 By Summer | Update #2

The end of the spring semester always is rough with finals and grades and meetings, so the blog has been neglected lately. I appreciate all those who have stuck around while I try to get back on track. Here is my second update for my makeup project pan challenge, #drop 10 by summer. I hope to be posting more regularly in the coming week. Keep on the look out!

Spring Sale Haul | Ulta, Sephora, & Derm Store

I had a 20% coupon at Ulta and Derm Store, and I am VIB Rouge at Sephora, so I took advantage of the spring 15% off sale to stock up on items I needed (or didn’t need, but wanted!).

First, at Sephora, I only got two things, because Derm Store has all the same products, and it was 20%, so I stocked up on my staples there instead. Abby needed a new moisturizer, and we both love the Belif true cream ($38), so I got her that. I got myself something I have been wanting ever since I tried a sample of Nirvana Bourbon. The Elizabeth and James kit of their Nirvana fragrances, which includes Bourbon (I think this was $26). I did get a 100 point perk: Ren Daily Defense cream. The samples I chose include Bobbi Brown concealer and it Cosmetics CC Illumination cream. I didn’t choose the Kenzoki moisturizer, but I will put it in my stash.

Ulta was my biggest haul. They had such good deals, like buy one get one plus 20% off everything. First, the Leader sheet masks were BOGO (originally, each $5), so I got the one for sun care and one for pore minimizing. Then NYX was buy two get one free, so I stocked up on my favorites: Microbrow in Taupe and Control Freak brow gel. I decided to try a new mascara, which is called the skinny…so we will see how that works.

Ulta brand was buy two get one free, so I got a new eyelash curler (labeled Japanese, but I don’t know how it is Japanese, $16) and a body spray in grapefruit. I did purchase a bunch of stuff from Hempz, Tony Moly, and other Ulta brand products, but I am not showing these products as they are for an auction a local charity is hosting. I am making a spa night basket for the auction and bought most of the items with my 20% off coupon. I also got Shiseido cotton squares (life!) and back up razors. I use Schick Hydro Silk Sensitive. Lastly, I got Urban Decay Naked Skin powder foundation in Light Neutral. I tried a sample of this a while ago and loved it, and it is currently on sale for $21.50, so I picked it up.

Lastly, as a new Derm Store customer, you get 20% off, so I decided to partake and get items I was going to get at the Sephora VIB sale. I purchased Sunday Riley Martian mattifying toner, Jurlique Activating Water Essence (hopefully this will replace my expensive SK II), and Vita Liberata gradual tanning lotion (love this stuff). I picked up two makeup items: Glo Minerals Color Correcting palette and Besame lipstick in Tango Red. I love the lip color and formulation. The color correcting palette works well, but it’s a lot smaller than I thought, and for $25 (original price), I don’t think it’s worth it.

Did you pick up anything during the spring sales? I would love to hear!

Sephora Play | April 2017

IMG_1133

I received my April Sephora Play box on Friday, and quickly opened it before leaving for a weekend trip away from home for a wedding. I was immediately underwhelmed…I have no need for any of these products and am not very excited to try them. Therefore, I will show you the products I received, bu do not have detailed reviews as I am placing these in my travel bin for my trip in May to Alaska.

I received three skincare items this month. I am curious to try the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream. I do need a new moisturizer, so this is my backup stash when I finish last month’s box moisturizer (from Glamglow). This is described as a lightweight moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid and ceramines which are humectants and lock in moisture. I also received Philosophy Purity Made Simple face wash and Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover. Both of these products are in my travel size bin for my upcoming trip.

Lastly, I received two makeup items and the standard fragrance sample. The perfume is from Miu Miu in L’Eau Bleue which is a floral fragrance with notes of lily of the valley and honeysuckle. I think I will enjoy this, but I never purchase full size perfumes due to their price tags. Make Up For Ever Aqua XL eye pencil waterproof eyeliner in black (M10) was included. I do not need another eye pencil right now, so it is in my backup stash for when I use up my Marc Jacobs sample. The last product is a primer from Smashbox, the famous Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer. I think I have used this in the past but do not remember it specifically. It is supposed to blur imperfections and create a flawaless finish. I will probably place this is a project pan in the next few months.

Needless to say, I was unimpressed with this box, and have been so-so on many of the past boxes. Therefore, I cancelled my subscription and am going to put this $10 toward my Beauty Heroes subscription, which is $39 per month, as I enjoy the full size products more than the deluxe size samples that I may or may not enjoy or contain ingredients I wish to use on my skin. What do you think of this service if you receive it, and did you enjoy your box this month?

Sephora VIB Wishlist | April 2017

Per rumors circulating around the Sephora spring VIB sale, it is expected the 15% for VIB and VIB Rouge members will occur around April 18th. I also believe Beauty Insiders will get 10% off around this time. While I have issues with Sephora and their point system and reward program, Sephora only has two sales a year: in November and April, making this time of year a good way to stock up on items.

I am on a low buy…not going great, as I placed a Derm Store order and bought a few things at Walmart and Target over the last few weeks (if interested, I can share in a haul), but I do have a few items in my Sephora online shopping cart. I am mainly looking to stock up on replacement items. Here is what I will be looking at getting during the sale:

Abby needs more face moisturizer, and we both have used multiple samples and deluxe size of the belif true cream, so I will be purchasing this for her. I really do love this stuff, as it is moisturizing yet not greasy, and good for both morning and night.

I love these Shiseido facial cottons. They are $10 for 160 count. I cut these in half to remove eye makeup and apply facial toner. They are soft and don’t leave behind lint. I typically only need a pack every four-six months, so I will purchase one pack and hope it lasts until the November sale.

My tarte eyelash curlers are getting old and grungy, so I am looking to replace them. I have heard good things about the Kevyn Aucoin curler, and they retail for $21. I think I may pick them up to replace my worn out pair.

Lastly, I am curious about the CoverFx Illuminating Setting Spray. I saw Tati show this product in a recent video, and the sprayer looked epic, and she raved about the actual product. I have been shopping around for a new setting spray, and had some fails recently with the nozzles: Pixi, Milani, and ELF. I may or may not pick this up, as it is $31 for 4 oz. I’ll update you after the sale.

This is probably a boring VIB wishlist for many beauty lovers, but as I said, I purchased a lot of the products I would have gotten during the Sephora sale at Derm Store, since you get 20% with your first purchase online with them. I knew the VIB sale is only 15%, so I opted to get more on sale through Derm Store. I will share a haul once I get all the items delivered.

What do you plan to get at the Sephora sale, if anything? Any recommendations for setting sprays and eyelash curlers would be greatly appreciated!
